Abstract: The article deals with the issues of motives and the assessment of the balance of benefits and losses of a break in formal education in the form of a “gap year”, based on the experience of Polish students. The study was conducted in the form of a questionnaire interview with 15 respondents. There were identified four groups of motives for undertaking a gap year: social, psychological, educational and economic. Moreover, based on the premises underlying decisions to take a break, five categories of gappers were distinguished: “travelers”, “dropouts”, “gappers who repeat a year at university or retake the final high school exam”, “workers”, and “undecided”. Gap year is taken by young Polish people in specific life situations, usually when they: drop out of university, try to improve the results of the final high school exams, or want to have more time to plan their further education. Gap year is a time when tourist activity is often undertaken. The respondents claimed that the break in formal education had brought them more benefits than losses.

Spatial layouts of the Josephine villages in Galicia

Abstract: The main aim of the article is to analyse the spatial layouts of selected settlement areas of the Josephine villages on the territory of former Galicia. After a short introduction on the legal aspects of demarcating of new villages, the primary forms of settlements were studied. In the first part of the article, the analyzes covered the following layouts of settlement areas: one-sided linear villages, two-sided linear villages and street-green villages. In the further part of the article, multi-road layouts were presented, including two- street layouts, radially -p lanned layouts, lattice chessboard layouts and cross-shaped layouts. The comparative analysis covers the discussion of all available types of settlement areas. Street layouts turned out to be the dominant pattern of settlement areas. After in-depth analyses, it is impossible to determine the regionalization of the linear villages’ distribution, as they were located throughout Galicia. The situation is different with the location of multi-road layouts, which were designed only in Eastern Galicia in the vicinity of Lviv. In the implementation of the assumed research problem, cartographic materials and source documents in the form of the Josephinian Cadastre, the Franciscan Cadastre and the Galician Cadastre obtained during searches conducted at the National Archives in Krakow, State Archives in Przemyśl and the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv were used.

Abstract: The work considers the cause of the frequency of droughts occurrence variability in Poland. It was proven, that the frequency of droughts shows statistically significant relationship with intensity of thermohaline circulation (THC) in the North Atlantic. In periods of occurrence of positive phase the THC frequency of droughts’ occurrence in Poland grows up and it is about 3.6 times greater, than in periods of occurrence of negative phase the THC. The sign and the value of coefficient characterizing the THC determines the drought occurrence and its duration time. Changeability of the THC is not however the only factor influencing on droughts’ occurrence. The analyses show, that the probability of the Spring and Summer droughts’ occurrence in a year with a positive THC phase is considerably larger, if in period of Winter preceding the drought, the sign of NAO index will be positive. At present (the year 2019) we are presumably already after the culmination of the positive phase of the THC, lasting from the year 1989. As the long-term course of the THC changeability shows the quasi- periodicity, we can presume, that the strong positive trend of occurrence of droughts, lasting from the 80’ of 20th century, will undergo break down.

Abstract: The article presents the issue of downburst over Poland. Strong downdrafts are a great danger in aviation, but can also cause damage on the surface of the Earth. On the basis of synoptic maps, aerological and radar data the analysis of synoptic and thermodynamic conditions of the atmosphere in which the phenomenon occurred was conducted. The appearance of the cold front over Lower Silesia and the occurrence of V-notch radar signature over Wroclaw may have suggested the formation of a storm and the associated downburst.

Abstract: The study presents the assessment of spatial distribution, including vertical variability of selected features of springs. For this aim, the data obtained during three hydrological mapping sessions in the upper Bystrzyca Dusznicka river catchment in the period of 1995–2018 was used. Thanks to the long-term observation series, comparative spatial analyzes of statistical distribution of spring’s selected features were possible. Furthermore, the variability of temperature, reaction and conductivity of rivers and springs were estimated, assessing these parameters along the tributaries course of the Bystrzyca Dusznicka river. Results for years of various precipitation conditions were compared. Presented analyzes allowed to identify and valorize the factors determining the variability and changes in springs characteristics during dry and moist years.

Abstract: Classes conducted in the field, thanks to a variety of educational functions, such as demonstrative learning of reality, shaping various skills and attitudes of students, are an opportunity for geographic education and showing geography as a useful subject in life. For many geography teachers, conducting fieldwork is a big challenge, mainly organizational. The aim of the research conducted by the authors was: a) learning the opinions of teachers about the difficulties in conducting geographical field classes and b) the legitimacy of their mandatory introduction to the new core curriculum. The article presents the results of a nationwide survey of geography teachers about fieldwork, which, according to the assumptions of the new curriculum, are to constitute an important element of geographic education. Research results indicate that teachers are full of concerns about readiness to conduct such classes, indicating organizational difficulties and deficiencies in methodical preparation. The effect of research is a conclusion about the need and possibilities to support teachers in meeting this new challenge. The existence of the entries themselves in the core curriculum does not guarantee their implementation in the work with students.
