Abstract: This paper focuses on urbanonyms as a translation problem. Analyzing the urban names selected from the official tourist portal of Warsaw in the source language (Polish), and their equivalents in the two target languages (English and Spanish), the author indicates the diversity of translation techniques and considers the possibilities of their unification with regard to specific types of naming, taking into account the functional aspect of the text, the needs of the recipient and the purpose of inter-lingual communication. The translation solutions presented, be it unique or repetitive, are illustrative of the difficulties requiring a systemic approach. The author emphasizes the influence of historical tradition on the formation of recognized equivalents, standing in some sense in opposition to the currently most desirable simple and unambiguous localizing equivalents.

Abstract: The article is a case study of Jana Kochanowskiego Street in Warsaw. The starting point is the statement on the late naming of the street with the name of the most important Polish pre-romantic poet in the capital city of Poland (in comparison to naming streets after minor poets). The author presents the circumstances that led to this situation and recreates the contexts accompanying the belated inclusion of Jan Kochanowski in the canon of writers who were preferred eponyms of streets in the capital of Poland after WWI. Next, he tries to compare Kochanowskiego Street in Warsaw with Kochanowskiego Streets in other large cities of Poland.

Abstract: This article focuses on one segment of a large corpus of urban naming – names referring to the literature. Using the example of Warsaw, the author has identified these names, distinguished three major categories of them, and also analysed their location. The category of names that commemorate writers and poets turned out to be the dominant one in terms of numbers, although there are also surprisingly significant amount of names referring to literary works. Names referring to writers and literary works often appear in clusters.

Abstract: This article focuses on the street naming in the Radość neighbourhood in the Wawer district of Warsaw. It draws attention to a very specific timing of naming streets in this part of the capital. The names result from the changes introduced as late as the second half of the 20th century. 82 contemporary names, some of them changed, are semantically analysed.

Abstract: City names are one of the most important tools of politics of memory – the politically conditioned shaping of public perceptions of the past. In Warsaw after 1945, the ruling communists pursued a naming programme in which they referred to figures, events and symbols associated with World War II. As a result, a canon of city names was created, which included both references to the ‘official’, communist vision of history and ‘alternative’ themes of an independence-oriented nature.

Abstract: The information about the creation of the ghetto in Warsaw was announced on 12 October 1940, and the final closure took place just over a month later. Ultimately, more than 400,000 people were imprisoned within the ghetto walls. The need to organise life in a reality that was completely different from that of the pre-war time led many Warsaw Jews to reflect on the essence of the ghetto and try to compare this phenomenon to other, often better, though usually only theoretically familiar places and spaces. Hence the large number of synonymous, entirely unofficial terms for the ghetto, referring to its various features. The most common terms include: labyrinth, trap, closed city, prison or camp, although apart from the most popular ones, both period sources and postwar memoirs contain many unobvious metaphors for the Warsaw Ghetto, its peculiar new “own names”, created from scratch, whether as a result of a deeper reflection or simply stemming from the need of the moment, as a reaction to what was happening around. A handful of the most interesting, least known and at the same time very telling names will be presented, together with the context of their creation.

Abstract: The research task was to trace the names of Szczecin restaurants existing in 2020–2022. The aim of the study was to show which naming tendencies exist in the contemporary urban names of Szczecin. The gathered onymic collection was subjected to semantic and formal analysis. On the basis of the study of the names of selected restaurants in Szczecin, it can be concluded that two opposing linguistic tendencies clash in the contemporary urban naming of Szczecin: 1. striving to revert to native names and 2. adopting foreign names. The onyms created in this way create a semantically and structurally heterogeneous collection of urbanonyms.

Abstract: The article is devoted to the names of urban bike stations and bicycle-sharing systems in Poland. The main naming types of urban bike stations are discussed using selected examples from across the country. The aim of the analysis was an attempt to show the similarities and differences in relation to other urban names, namely to the names of public transport stops). It was concluded that the same naming models were used in both types of onyms. The onomastic analysis of the names of bicycle-sharing systems aimed to indicate the main functions of these onyms. It has been shown that individual elements of the names of bicycle-sharing systems have a persuasive and identifying function, and language games were used to create the names.

Abstract: German signs in the urban space of Wrocław and Toruń have become an object of interest for local activists. The research problem addressed in the article is the demands of the people involved in this issue, their experiences, the motivations behind their activities, the demands for the preservation of this form of cultural heritage, and the public perception of the activities according to the activists themselves. Representatives of analogous initiatives were interviewed: Spod tynku patrzy Breslau [Breslau looks on from underneath the plaster] (Wrocław) and Literołap [Letter-catcher] (Toruń). The interviews were then subjected to theoretical reflection from the perspective of memory studies. It emerged from both that activism centred around inscriptions within urban space stems from one’s own interests and meets with a positive response from the local community, while the reach is limited to history and heritage enthusiasts, resulting in being stuck in an information bubble.
