About

The Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Warsaw is one of the most important centers for geographical research in Poland. It offers studies in geography, spatial management, and urban studies, combining a rich tradition with modern research methods. The Faculty consists of six departments, a library, and the Mazovian Geographical Center in Murzynowo.

Currently, the unit is headed by Prof. Maciej Jędrusik.

Nearly 150 people work at the Faculty, including over 100 researchers and teachers. Approximately 700 students study here, gaining knowledge and skills also during numerous field courses and project classes.

The main headquarters are located in a historic building at 30 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, in the heart of the University of Warsaw.

The history of teaching geography at the University of Warsaw dates back to 1918, when the Department of Geography was established, headed by Prof. Stanisław Lencewicz from 1922. In the interwar period, the Department of Anthropogeography was established, and during the occupation, secret teaching was conducted. After the war, Jerzy Kondracki reactivated the field of study, and in 1952, the Institute of Geography was established. In 1969, it gained independence, while the African Studies Program (since 1962) also developed in parallel.
In 1977, the two units were merged to form the current Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies.

Over the years, the Faculty’s headquarters have changed several times – from the Vice-Rector’s Building, through the Staszic Palace, to the Uruski-Czetwertyński Palace (see: History of the Faculty).

We conduct extensive research in the fields of physical, socio-economic, and regional geography, cartography, remote sensing, geoinformatics, spatial management, urban planning, as well as urban studies on various scales. The Faculty implements numerous projects financed by the National Science Centre, the National Centre for Research and Development, ministerial programmes, EU framework programmes and other international funds. It also cooperates with partners outside the scientific system, conducting research on their behalf. Our employees and doctoral students cooperate with the best research centers in the world as well as with the social and economic environment.
