The preservation of natural and landscape resources is essential for sustainable development. The community of Brudzeń Duży municipality recognises that natural and cultural assets are not only elements of local identity but also foundational for everyday wellbeing and genuine developmental value. Research conducted by a team from the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies in the vicinity of Brudzeń Landscape Park focused on assessing the environmental conditions of these areas and exploring the possibilities for their protection.
In response to the needs of local authorities, researchers from our faculty carried out a comprehensive inventory of natural resources in the areas adjacent to Brudzeń Landscape Park (BPK). The scope of research included, among others:
• avifauna (wild bird populations),
• herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles),
• plant communities and rare flora species,
• landscape and cultural values.
The inventory identified areas of exceptional natural value, recommending their protection—including the creation of reserves. This initiative represents a best practice in collaboration between science and local government, marking a tangible step towards implementing strategies for socio-economic development while respecting natural and cultural heritage resources. During the fieldwork conducted from November 2023 to July 2024, researchers recorded:
• 101 bird species, many legally protected, including the northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus, classified as endangered according to the Red List) and seven species listed under the EU Birds Directive; 10 amphibian and 3 reptile species, all protected in Poland, seven of which are additionally protected under EU regulations (Habitats Directive);
• Sites of protected plants, identified and georeferenced using GPS during field observations;
• Values of abiotic nature and landscapes, assessed according to the legal standards and regional guidelines.
