At the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies, we envision our future in bright colours. We have set ourselves several goals and are progressing towards them along a clear path. Our priorities are focused on intensifying research, disseminating results, and implementing their outcomes. Our main ambition is to strengthen the faculty’s role as an expert centre for national and regional institutions. We aim to become a leading research centre in geographical sciences by deepening our partnerships with international collaborators. We also seek to develop field research and promote a more hands-on approach to science. For this reason, we are committed to expanding our field research facility – the Mazovian Geographic Centre.
Our first goal is to enhance the faculty’s position as the foremost centre of geographical research in Poland, and one of key importance in Europe. This will be achieved through intensified cooperation with foreign institutions, particularly in Latin America, and by organising scientific congresses. A major initiative in this regard is the organisation of the international symposium The Latin American Congress of Social and Environmental Sciences, scheduled for June 2025. Our next objective is to strengthen the faculty’s role as a centre of territorial expertise for urban, regional, and spatial policy. We want the faculty to be recognised as an expert brand, which is why we aim to expand cooperation with public administration and non-governmental organisations. Our research offers clear insights into the optimal development of human-used space. Its findings should inform the creation of the most effective policies in this area. To support this, we organise meetings that facilitate the exchange of experiences, such as the regularly held interdisciplinary conference Warsaw in the Light of Scientific Research. Looking forward, we also want to highlight the faculty’s role as a partner in ecological, climatic and spatial transformation processes. The advisory position of our research teams should be particularly prominent in matters concerning climate change adaptation, sustainable water resource management, and the development of blue-green infrastructure. We are working towards launching a new study specialisation related to this field and are intensifying our efforts within various commissioned projects. The final priority is the reconstruction and modernisation of the Mazovian Geographic Centre, with the aim of creating a modern research station. This institution has operated since 1974 in Murzynowo near Płock. Reinvigorating its activities will enable us to host symposia and conferences, conduct field classes, internships and workshops for students from various UW faculties, as well as carry out field studies and observations on the impact of a large industrial city on adjacent rural areas. The station will use renewable energy sources, conduct climate research in the region, and expand cooperation with Mazovian schools in organising outdoor education and teacher training for conducting fieldwork activities.
